The Ruff Report: Dogs and Surveys

Is your dog's breed on most mischievous list?

The Labrador retriever, the dog known best for its fun-loving demeanor, apparently has another side to its personality that is less known. These happy-go-lucky pets are the breed that gets into the most mischief, statistics from a poison control center show.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says owners of Labrador retrievers were the ones who placed the most calls to its poison control center in 2012. The ASPCA's center received 180,000 calls and 14,000 of them were from nervous Labrador retriever owners.

"The Labrador retriever is one of the most popular breeds in this country, and evidently they get into the most trouble as well," Dr. Tina Wismer, medical director at the animal poison control center, states in a media release.

Domestic shorthair cats placed second on the list with in approximately 10,000 cases, but dogs occupied the rest of the top spots. The rankings are: mixed breeds, third with 8,000 cases; Chihuahuas, fourth with 4,833 cases; golden retrievers, fifth with 4,819 cases; Yorkshire terriers, sixth with 3,800 cases.

"There is no telling what types of calls we will get on a given day at the ASPCA's animal poison control center, but there are clear trends that surface when we analyze our case data," Wismer said. "Dogs explore the world with their mouths, so it is not surprising that the overwhelming majority of calls we get are from dog owners.

The poison control center also handled calls regarding horses, snakes, primates, fish and even a bear in 2012.
