The Ruff Report: Dogs and Surveys

Dog has become woman's best friend, too

Dogs have always been known as man's best friend, but they have apparently become great pals for women, too, because when it comes to displaying love and affection, mothers rank their pooches heads and tails above their children.
According to a survey done by Britain's Kennel Club, some 75 percent of mothers think that their dog is better at showing love and affection for them than their children.

“We are a nation of dog lovers, so I am not surprised that millions of women across the country will be turning not only to their children, but also to their dogs, for unlimited displays of love and affection," Kennel Club spokeswoman Caroline Kisko states in a media release.

The survey also found:
  • 80 percent of dog-owning moms say that their pooch is more obedient than their children.
  • 57 percent say dogs are easier to fit into their lifestyle.
  • 46 percent think that dogs are a good alternative to having children.
The Kennel Club also is emphasizing the importance of motherly naturing when it comes to dogs. Puppies need the right amount of time with their natural mothers before they pass into new hands. Failure to do this can lead to psychological problems for the puppy in its early years and later in life.

"Puppies have their own natural mothers as well, and this relationship needs to be respected in the early weeks of a puppy’s life," Ms. Kisko said. "Responsible breeders ... will rarely sell their puppies before they are 8 weeks old."

Responsible breeders will allow prospective pet parents to see the puppies with their mother, in their home environment and give their dogs the required health tests for their breed, the Kennel Club says.

Irresponsible breeders, who breed purely for profit, will often sell from neutral environments, such as service stations, where prospective buyers will be unable to see the conditions in which the puppy was raised or assess the mother’s temperament and physical condition,
the Kennel Club says.
